Daniella Reimann (D) : Integrated media education in the 3D-community space SecondLife – an environment for higher media education in Mixed Reality.

Daniela Reimann & Maria Cristina Biazus

The disciplines of arts and computer science were integrated in education scenarios in the framework of a model project ArtDeCom funded under the “Cultural education in the media age” program of the German Bund-Länder-Commission. In the project, the disciplines of arts, design and computer science have been integrated in the context of Mixed Reality learning spaces (Reimann, D. 2006) developed in general education.

Following from the project, the concept of media art labs has
been introduced as a didactic concept to teach interactive media at
school and university level. The projects have shown that the aesthetic context and artistic concepts strongly motivate learning and shaping processes related to conceptualize, design, construct and program the digital media as parts of the creative thinking and acting processes.

The follow up initiative is developing further the idea of augmented virtual 3D-community spaces. During the last year, a lot of activities have been introduced related to the development of art, art galleries, museums as well as artist-in-residence programs such as ArsVirtua and the OSMOSA, an open source museum for open source art. However, only little attempt has been undertaken in scrutinizing the use of such a community space for artistic research projects and higher media education.

The lecture will introduce the concept of Mixed Reality learning spaces and give an outline of a collaborative project initiated in the field of immersive 3D-Online communities (SecondLife) as an environment for higher media education. The ongoing project presented is based on the co-operation of two institutes in different countries. On the long run, the project aims to explore the opportunities opening up by augmenting the virtual 3D-community space with video streaming and machinima for collaborative artistic project-based work of dispersed teams.
