Edge of a Wood follows two earlier works by Rodney Graham, specifically
the performance Illuminated Ravine, 1979, and the film Two
Generators, 1984. In Two Generators the movement of water drives
generators which power lights that illuminate the turbulent water. Like
Two Generators, Edge of a Wood was shot with two cameras and is
displayed on two screens. It starts in complete darkness and silence,
the sound of the helicopter is heard approaching and the helicopter
then hovers playing its searchlight on the edge of a wood. The searchlight
only uncovers the scene for a few moments at a time and after
hovering for a while it goes away and we return to darkness and
silence. Sound is an important element in this work and the roar of the
helicopter intensifies the physical experience. |
