CANAN (TUR): “ibretnüma”/”exemplary” (2009)

Duration: 27'30"
Writing, editing, voice over: CANAN
Color with English subtitle

The devastatingly beautiful daughter of a poor family in the south-eastern part of Turkey is the main character in the animated video work Exemplary (2009). The storyline echoes ancient folk tales, and the narrative style is akin to One Thousand and One Nights, but addresses the contemporary context of women in Turkish society, imbued with tensions that oscillate between secular values and the emergent sensitivities of moral conservatives and
institutionalised religion.

Through the life of the main protagonist the narrative problematises the oppressiveness of the institutions of marriage and family, the political and religious instrumentalisation of the female body and the implementation of the notion of female beauty as a topos of orientalisation and consumerist exploitation. The video uses abundant visual vocabulary that resembles classical Ottoman miniature illuminations and calligraphy, many of them adapted from their original forms and combined with collaged fragments.

Hicap
Duration: 5 mins 5 secs
The work is a recording of the performance Hicap carried out by the artist Canan herself. In the performance Canan acts out a dressing scene in front of a documentary montage. The performance begins with Canan wearing a burka and continues with her being transformed into a person dressed in typical western clothing. The documentary montage behind Canan changes as she changes clothing, thus reflecting the social conditions and issues typical of the woman Canan portrays via the clothing in question. Canan describes her art through the feminist slogan “the personal is political”.
This view is also expressed in Hicap, where the female role is at the centre, on a political as well as a religious level in the form of a burka and image montage depicting political situations, but also on a corporeal and intimate level in the form of nakedness and images of bathroom scales. In her performance Hicap Canan addresses various cultural conflicts, on an international as well as an individual level, playing with cultural female roles, but common to all is the fact that she takes as her point of departure women’s role and conflicts.
